My experience as General Evaluator
My icebreaker speech for Burke TM Club for tomorrow meeting is my experience as general evaluator.

Taking a role as General Evaluator that night, I was very excited and I felt I was ready. I had studied the basic manual as TMOD suggested and I took some notes on things I needed to do prior to the meeting and during the meeting. On the other hand, I felt like I forgot something; I forgot to bring something important, but I didn’t dwell on it.
Before the meeting, I made sure all the speech evaluators were there. Although some came just right before the meeting, everything was OK. They seemed very experienced because they had already had the manual of the speakers and studied the speech objectives for the evaluations.
Oh, well, I found myself a good seat that had a full view of all participants. After the meeting started I realized that the Timer and the Grammarian & Ah counter had not arrived yet. I was quietly moving out of my seat to find substitution in between applause. I was grateful that two members stepped up gracefully and ready to serve. Then I calmed down and settled back to my seat. I observed and took more notes as each speech presented.
After all the speech evaluation, I had so much in my head and in my notes that I wanted to say, but I couldn’t, I could only deliver a short comment thanking the guest to wrap up the overall evaluation.
I wanted to say to TMOD: wonderful Toastmaster of Evening 1) you started the meeting on time, 2) the flow of the meeting went smoothly, 3) you gave great introduction, personal and informative, for each of the speakers
I wanted to say to WM: I liked the word of the day because we all need”Brouhaha” to do our job.
I wanted to say to HM: well done on delivering the joke of the day in such a short notice and thanked him for stepping up the plate.
To TTM: “Great table topics” you even got the visitor participating.
To speakers: First speech “Journey to America” made me think of my trip to America.
To the second speaker: “Nice surprise opening” on the cluttering weight lost challenge
To the third speaker: “ Painted picture of the daily commute made me feel very fortunate; when I drove to work at nightshift, I owned the street.”
To the fourth speaker: “What an inspirational speech on the soccer experience!”
To the fifth speaker: “what an entertaining speech on the squirrels!”
To the speech evaluators: great evaluations, positive, upbeat and got to the point so the speakers had something to bring home to work on to improve their skills. What area of the meeting needed to improve? All I could think of was a better General Evaluator.
I had those thoughts in my head. I had those thoughts in my notes, but my mouth was not cooperating. Ah, then I remembered what I forgot to bring. I left the mouth that worked at home. Let me share this old Chinese saying with you: righteous woman is the silent one. I have practiced my mouth such way for all these years; you see why my mouth had its mind of its own. Now my heart has changed but my mouth has not.
I realized that many times I practiced in my head would not help me improve my speaking skills. The only way to improve my speaking skills is by doing more speech. I emailed my VP in education right away that I wanted to sign up for my icebreaker speech as soon as I may.
Only way to get my mouth to cooperate with my thought is to use it more often. Just like a kid learning to talk, I don’t have to be good to start talking, but I must start talking in order to be good. I need more practice in making speech, and with all your help, I can be good someday. Then I will always bring my mouth that works with me everywhere I may go. I will not leave home without it.
